Captain Joseph Walker discovered the Walker Area in 1863 when he stumbled on gold nuggets walking along Lynx Creek. Walker's post office was established December 15, 1879 and was discontinued September 30, 1940. Walker was once a boomtown sustained for over eighty years of gold mining. As much as 2700 residents were reported to have lived in the area in the late 1800’s.

In 1908, some of these buildings burned. A 2nd fire hit Downtown Walker in 1910. This fire was disastrous and most of the proprietors lost everything. Before the fire reached the Gronlund's Saloon, a few nearby locals helped Mr. Gronlund move all the contents of the saloon, including a big barrel of whiskey from the basement, to the Walker Jailhouse which the fire did not reach.
